You're invited to join the virtual event Discussion of "Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do" with Dr. Dale Trevino on Sunday, August 9, from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. MT.
In Whistling Vivaldi, social psychologist Claude Steele describes the powerful role that stereotypes play in human behavior and the different ways people respond to the identities of others. Steele begins by recalling his 1950s childhood in Chicago and the day when he first became aware of his Black identity. During his decades of research as a social psychologist, Steele has studied many different forms of identity – including race, gender, ethnicity, social orientation, class/age and human behavior. The central theme of this lecture is identity, how it is expressed through stereotypes, and the powerful impact stereotypes have on human behavior. He provides practical strategies that can be applied to the world of education, in particular the classroom. His book is scientific in nature and a story of social psychology and research itself that lays out a plan for reshaping American identities.
